A regular cleaning treats the surfaces above the gum line for prevention. A deep cleaning (periodontal therapy) treats the area below the gum line to resolve an existing infection.
A deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, is recommended when there are signs of gum disease, such as deeper gum pockets, bleeding, inflammation, bone loss, or buildup below the gum line. Unlike routine cleanings, deep cleanings aren't done on a set schedule for everyone. After your deep cleaning, we'll evaluate your gum health and recommend the right maintenance schedule — many patients with gum disease benefit from periodontal maintenance cleanings every 3 to 4 months.
Periodontal disease can't always be "cured" in the traditional sense, especially once bone loss has occurred. However, it can often be treated and managed with the right care. The goal is to remove harmful bacteria and buildup, reduce inflammation, and keep the gums and supporting bone as stable as possible.
The area is numbed, so most patients feel little discomfort during treatment. Your gums may feel a little tender for a few days afterward, and our comfort menu helps you relax during your visit.
Deep cleanings are often covered at a certain percentage, depending on your plan's coverage. We'll review your benefits with you before treatment.
