Tooth Pain in Fulshear, TX

What Tooth Pain Can Mean

Tooth pain is your mouth’s way of telling you that something needs attention. At MK Dental Studio in Fulshear, TX, Dr. Madiha Khanani, DDS, FAGD, helps patients find the cause and explains the options in plain language. The pain might be a sharp twinge when you bite, a dull ache, sensitivity to hot or cold, or a throbbing that keeps you up at night. The type of pain offers clues, but only an exam can show what is really going on.

Common Causes of Tooth Pain

Some of the most common causes are:

  • A cavity: decay can cause sensitivity to sweets, hot, or cold. Learn more about cavities.
  • A cracked or chipped tooth: often hurts when you bite down or release. Read more about a cracked tooth.
  • Gum disease: inflamed gums can feel sore and may bleed when you brush.
  • Exposed roots: when gums recede, the root surface can feel sensitive, especially to cold.
  • Grinding or clenching: can leave your teeth and jaw sore in the morning.
  • An infection or abscess: may cause throbbing pain, swelling, a bad taste, or a small bump on the gum.
  • Wisdom teeth: a wisdom tooth that is coming in can make the back of your mouth sore or swollen.

Because the cause isn’t always obvious, it’s best to have it checked early, while the problem is often simpler to treat.

What to Do at Home Until Your Visit

These steps may help until you can see us. They do not replace an exam.

  • Rinse gently with warm salt water to keep the area clean.
  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever, following the directions on the label.
  • Hold a cold compress against your cheek for short periods if there is swelling.
  • Avoid very hot or very cold foods and drinks, and chew on the other side.
  • Don’t put aspirin or other pain medicine directly on your gums or tooth. It can burn the gum tissue.

How We Diagnose and Treat Tooth Pain at MK Dental Studio

Your visit starts with a conversation about when the pain started and what makes it better or worse. Dr. Khanani then completes an exam and takes the digital X-rays needed to see below the surface. She will explain what she finds and review your options before any treatment begins.

Depending on the cause, treatment may include:

If your tooth needs more advanced care, such as a root canal, an extraction, or wisdom tooth removal, Dr. Khanani will explain your options and coordinate with a trusted specialist if that’s the best fit.

Emergency Exam, Insurance, and Financing

Our $59 emergency exam includes a focused exam, the X-ray needed for the area of concern, and a review of your findings and treatment options. Treatment costs depend on what you need. We accept most PPO plans and will review your benefits with you. For care that isn’t fully covered, we offer flexible payment plans through Cherry financing.

Tooth Pain FAQs – Fulshear, TX

Can tooth pain go away on its own?

Sometimes the pain fades for a while, but the cause usually doesn’t. A cavity, crack, or infection can keep getting worse even after it stops hurting.

Why does my tooth hurt when I bite down?

Pain when biting can come from a cracked tooth, a cavity, a worn or loose filling, or inflammation around the root. Dr. Khanani can find the cause with an exam and X-rays.

Should I go to the dentist or the ER for tooth pain?

For most tooth pain, call your dentist first. Go to the ER or call 911 if you have spreading facial swelling, a fever, or trouble breathing or swallowing.

Can I get a same-day appointment?

Call 281-219-8000 as early in the day as you can, and we will do our best to see you quickly, often the same day when the schedule allows.
